On 11th October, I attended the UK Construction week and Grand Designs Live events at the NEC in Birmingham. This was my first time attending the event and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I initially started out at the Timber Expo as that was the area I was primarily interested in. I was able to walk around at my own pace and talk to various companies about their products, seeing if any would be useful to pass onto current and future clients.
I had signed up for two CPD sessions whilst there, one was on inclusive workplaces and the other was on sound insulation. Both sessions were well attended and the speakers gave a really good insight into their topics and got the audience involved.
After lunch I headed across to the Grand Designs Live show and although Kevin McCloud wasn’t there on the day I went, it was still good walking around and seeing some the products on show and the vast number of suppliers that were there. They had a big stage set up to one side and I stood at the back listening to the speakers. At first I just listened then soon realised that the people speaking were the parents who built the allergy free house for their children. Having recently just watched the episode from the latest grand designs on TV it was good hearing them talk about it in person and I gained a better understanding of the process they went through for the health of their children.
To round off my day there I went back into the Construction show and explored the other sections. The place was quite busy but I moved from one show to another taking in all the products and stopping to talk to people if I was interested in finding out more about their product. I was especially looking out for other products that would benefit current projects in the office. I stopped and talking to several people and came away with lots of cards, free pens, brochures and samples!
