On 19th July the PDP (aptly named Probably Dreadful Participants) team of seasoned Athletes took part in a Derby Bondholder event that gave us all a blast from the past, writes Ciaran Spalding. The Derby Business Games is a School Sports day themed event that started out with team sports and ended in real grass roots School Sports day races. There was Egg and Spoon, Sack Race, and Wheel Barrow racing to name a few.
All in all, the day was an excellent event to get out and get to grips with some of the Derby Bondholders that all support the Derby Marketing initiative and mingle with some of our regular friends and meeting some new ones whilst enjoying some sports, sunshine and any excuse for a barbeque.
The evening started off with a school style assembly where we all sat down in the very impressive new University of Derby Indoor Sports Hall. We received our directions and the regular Health and Safety fire protocols you come to expect and then we were off to the Astro Turf fields for some Rounders. The PDP team being the exceptional Athletic business we are were in good form on the Rounders pitch, some of us even hit the ball a few times: when did hitting a ball with a bat become so difficult? We did, however, do surprisingly well at the Rounders on the day, or at least being one of the least terrible teams, but with a lot of confusion, shouting and laughing we made our way through the standings to around the mid table mark.
After the team events were done we had to divide our team of 8 into groups to tackle the various races we had lined up. We spent a long time analysing the Athletic abilities and various strengths of the team and decided on our elite force to take on such obstacles as the sack race, three-legged race, egg and spoon, wheel barrow and sack race. Needless to say, when the actual events came round the finish lines definitely seemed to move further and further away from us. After yet more laughs and some exceptional banter from the event MC, all of the participants were ready for a sit down, some Barbeque and an ice cream.
If you haven’t taken part in the Derby Business games before I strongly recommend taking part in the 2019 event if you are a Derby Bondholder. We had a wonderful evening and many, many laughs. Next year we might even train a bit!
