For the last 50 years the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has championed great architectural design across the globe. The awards attempt to celebrate the innovations in architectural design and a commitment to developing spaces for the improvement and enhancement of people’s lives.
The awards showcase the triumphs of the year in a number of categories, each attempting to shed light on projects of varying sizes, budgets and or otherwise. The main categories are ‘The Client of the Year Award’, which rewards the patrons for whom most of the buildings would not be possible, ‘The Stephen Lawrence Award’, which celebrates buildings with a construction budget of under £1 million and ‘The Stirling Prize’, which is the most prestigious of the awards, celebrating the best building of the year.
There are other categories that the RIBA honours, including regional commendations. These are presented at regional ceremonies and the winners recognised at the main ceremony. This year’s ceremony was held at 66 Portland Place, London (RIBA Headquarters) and attended by luminaries such as David Chipperfield, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Adam Caruso and Peter St John.
The Main winner at the ceremony were Caruso St John Architects, who’s Newport Street Gallery won the Stirling Prize. The Steven Lawrence Prize, which fits our practices’ ideology of creating great spaces economically and sustainably, was won, this year by Tsuruta Architects for their work at the House of Trace in London. This was a small restoration project of a terraced house.
The RIBA awards are a chance for the world to reflect on outstanding architectural design. As a practice our ambition is to achieve great design ‘for design’s sake’, which we believe will propel us into these echelons. With our clients working in collaboration with our young, vibrant team, we are confident this will happen. We are already working on a number of projects that, once realised, will break the normal convention of space making. In the meantime we would like to thank you, the client, for facilitating good design that is made possible by your continued support.
