Planning & Design Practice was appointed to design and secure planning permission for a small but impactful single-storey sunroom extension in Cromford. Working in collaboration with Ollie Mart Builders and Oakwright’s, the brief was to create a light-filled space that enhances the home’s connection to its garden and panoramic views across the Derwent Valley, while respecting the character of the traditional stone cottage.
The Cottage occupies an elevated position just outside Cromford and within the buffer zone of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Although not listed and outside the conservation area, the property sits in a sensitive landscape setting with glimpsed views from public footpaths and the Cromford Canal towpath. The existing dwelling comprises an original farmhouse with later extensions, set within a generous plot that allowed scope for a modest addition without compromising openness.
Pre-application advice confirmed the principle of development and guided key design refinements, including aligning the ridge of the sunroom with the dormer above for visual harmony. The design adopts a minimalist approach, balancing traditional materials with contemporary glazing. The oak-framed glazed structure became the focal point, requiring precision detailing to achieve structural integrity and aesthetic elegance. This solution delivers a modern intervention that feels rooted in its rural context.
This project demonstrates how a small-scale intervention can deliver significant lifestyle and aesthetic benefits. By combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary detailing, and working collaboratively with trusted partners, Planning & Design Practice delivered a sunroom that feels both timeless and transformative. It’s a perfect example of how sensitive design can unlock the potential of rural homes in heritage settings.
