Discovering Derbyshire with Jon Millhouse

PDP_A Derbyshire Discovery

Our Director and Heritage Specialist, Jon Millhouse, can now add published author to his list of accomplishments, with the release of his first book. A labour of love and long held ambition “Derbyshire: A Journey of Discovery” was written by Jon in his spare time over the past few years.

A personal and sometimes humorous account, in “Derbyshire: A Journey of Discovery” Jon explores the length and breadth of his home county, celebrating its landscapes, buildings and communities and recounting its long history. He also addresses broader issues such as climate change, social class and changing technologies through the prism of one county.

Jon says “I believe that Derbyshire is one of the most fascinating and varied counties in England, containing everything from rugged uplands to gentle lowlands; grand country houses to humble coal mining villages. Having played host to Roman legions, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and Viking invaders, it also saw England’s first industrial communities and the first National Park.”

This book is a celebration, discovering Derbyshire’s landscapes, buildings and communities, and its fascinating history.

Jon Millhouse joined Planning & Design in 2004 after gaining a First in Environmental Design and Conservation at Oxford Brookes University. He has since carried out further training in Urban Design at Birmingham City University and completed the RIBA Conservation Course.

A member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Jon is also a Full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) with a specialist interest in Historic Building Conservation.

“Derbyshire: A Journey of Discovery” is available to purchase from Waterstones and other online retailers including Shield Crest Book Publishing.
